Have a pint with Best of Kin.

The word kin isn’t an accident for this brewery, which has now made its home on 14th street on the border of Calgary’s Sunalta neighborhood. Not only do three brothers run Best of Kin, but their philosophy of community being akin to family (see what we did there?) plays a big part in their operating values.

Ryan Mortson, Collin Mortson and Cole Glendinning quit their jobs in 2017 to pursue their dream of starting a brewery. Until then, they had been practicing home brewing in a garage. Collin travelled to Scotland to get a brew master’s degree and came back with a leveled-up skillset. This set the ball in motion for them to begin wholesale brewing and learning about the craft beer industry.

When it came time to put down roots in their own brewery and taproom, they sought a location that would support their community-oriented thinking, somewhere that would bring people together. It was important to Kin Brewing to create an inclusive space where everyone was welcome from beer drinkers, wine drinkers, no-drinkers and minors. They even did their best to bring in employees from their locale.

The community values were what brought Best of Kin to connectFirst as their main financier. At connectFirst we love partnering with businesses that strengthen their neighborhoods and have a community focus. And we’re glad Best of Kin came to us!

What else are they up to?
Their tap room seems to be compromised of random family’s dining room tables with mismatched chairs and tables. The wood walls and open sunlight give the space a warm feel despite the industrial walls of the building it’s housed in. The menu is a reflection of childhood nostalgia, with dishes such as Betty’s Hamburger Helper, an elevated take on every mom’s favorite quick meal comprised of a short rib Bolognese, smoke carrot puree, basil pistou, serpentine noodles and shaved parmesan. And if you’re bringing your little ones don’t worry, they have a robust kid’s menu fit to suit any kid’s palette.

If you want to have a brew and be a part of the kin you can visit them at 1059 14th SW, Calgary. You can view their full menu at bestofkin.ca.
