Investment Scams

Be aware. Stay protected.

Be aware of the increasing number of investment scams out there. Scammers might try to convince you to invest in something that doesn't exist, and they might use a well-known brand to make it seem legit.

It's tough to realize that you've unknowingly lost your savings to a fake website. Scammers might keep asking for more money or try to access your accounts. Once the money is gone, it's often too late to get it back.

Dealing with the aftermath of falling for a scam can be challenging and can significantly impact your finances. But by staying informed and taking proactive steps, you can protect yourself, your family, and your savings.

Here are some helpful tips to keep yourself safe and resources for victims. Remember, your credit union is here to support you every step of the way on your financial journey. Your success and safety mean the world to us!

Do your research.

  • Check out any investment company with the Competition Bureau to ensure they're legit.
  • Try adding "scam" to your search for a company or platform.
  • Contact companies directly to verify the staff members you're dealing with.
  • Be careful about sharing personal info online with anyone claiming to be a financial advisor.
  • If you're considering expanding your investment portfolio, chat with us. We're here to help you make the right choices!

Trust your gut.

  • If an offer seems too good to be true, it probably is!
  • Protect your devices and information: NEVER share your login details with anyone or write them down and NEVER provide remote access to your devices.

Stay safe online.

  • Try to change your passwords regularly and avoid using the same password for different logins.
  • It's best not to use public Wi-Fi for online banking.
  • Make sure to keep your anti-virus and anti-spyware up to date and use a firewall for extra protection.
  • Remember not to click on any pop-ups.

Use e-Transfers with confidence.

  • Only accept e-transfers from people you know.
  • Always use a security question and password.
  • Never share the code to add a contact or send a transfer to someone else.
  • Take a moment to double-check notifications for spelling errors and ensure they are legitimate requests or receipts.

Cryptocurrency

Cryptocurrency is a common target for investment scams. Unlike traditional money, cryptocurrency is not backed by any government and only exists online, making it harder to track. Scammers usually tempt victims with promises of high investment returns and pressure them to act quickly.

It can be a promising opportunity, but it's important to remember that it's not a get-rich-quick scheme, and there are no guarantees of making money. This is a friendly reminder to invest only what you can afford to lose.
